Santa Maria Elks Rodeo and Parade Starts This Week, Here's What You Need to Know
Tradition runs deep with the 80th Annual Santa Maria Elks Rodeo and Parade. Steeped in the town’s history since 1944, the parade and rodeo will continue to capture the hearts, young and old alike, of our community from June 1st-4th with the jingle of a cowbell.
Synonymous with the beginning of summer, the rodeo beckons the town to channel their inner cowboy or cowgirl, don their western garb, and mosey on over to the Elks Event Center for an event reminiscent of the good ole days.
When you think of a rodeo, what pops into your head?
Cowboys? No brainer.
Bull riding? Check.
Barrel racing? You betcha.
But how ‘bout kicking off the rodeo with the Beard-A-Reno Contest? Yep, you heard right.
Seven lucky well-coifed winners will put their bearded manes on display as the winners of the treasured custom-made silver belt buckle awarded in whisker-loving categories, including longest, best attempt, best mustache, and of course, the Best All-Around.
If you’re the more adventurous type (and an Elks member), hankering for the glory of the arena spotlight, engulfed in the cheering of adoring fans, grab a partner—nope, not do-si-doing here--and get ready to put your riding skills to the test as you pair up for the Elks Team Roping contest! Competitors will vie for $1,000 added purse money and awards.
What about our mini fans? Aspiring cowboys and cowgirls ages 5-7 and weighing under 60 pounds get to try their hand at Mutton Bustin’. This fan-favorite event will have little ones wrangling to hold on and try to ride the sheep the longest. Those under 12 will get a taste of being an actual rodeo cowboy when they enter the Jr. Breakaway Roping contest. Winners for both contests earn the coveted silver buckle with the roping winner also tagging on a $50 payout.
Another can’t-miss rodeo event is also one of the most beloved. The Santa Maria Elks Rodeo Parade, held on June 3rd, is free, and everyone is invited to join in the festivities commemorating the parade’s history while embracing the community’s diversity.
From marching bands to antique cars, from decorated floats to equestrian groups, the event brings the town together with parade-goers lining the streets to catch all the fun, including a glimpse of the Elks Rodeo Queen and her court.
